Walden by Henry Thoreau Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words
Walden by Henry Thoreau - Essay Example The author harps on the self sufficiency while penning down the book which is clearly evident from the lines: ââ¬Å"There is no odor so bad as that which arises from the goodness tainted. It is human, it is divine, carrion. If I knew for a certainty that a man was coming to my house with the conscious design of doing me good, I should run to my life. No- in this case I would rather suffer evil the natural way.â⬠(Thoreau) The paper attempts to analyze Walden with a critical perspective. Once the reader starts reading the book he/she is acquainted with the knowledge of what made the author reside in a cabin made by him by the Walden Pond. The author feels that most of the people in this world spend their time in ââ¬Å"mere ignorance and mistakesâ⬠(Thoreau) where the quest is only for acquiring luxuries. The author feels that the labor is wasted ââ¬Å"from excessive toilâ⬠where man fails to acquire the ââ¬Å"true integrityâ⬠. (Thoreau) But the author makes it clear that he was not a hermit who wanted to spend the time in the nature zealot but he was guided by a set of philosophical set of ideas. The reading of the book reveals the effort of the author in self discovery which was an experiment to learn how to live life. The author approach of life is that to live free and uncommitted as he is of the opinion that ââ¬Å"It makes but little difference whether you are committed to a farm or the county jailâ⬠. (Thoreau) He makes a difference between the mortal and the immortal by saying ââ¬Å"In accumulating property for ourselves or our posterity, in founding a family or a state, or acquiring fame even, we are mortal; but in dealing with truth we are immortalâ⬠(Thoreau). The reading of the book reveals the authorââ¬â¢s education from the nature when he says ââ¬Å"I had more than ever come within the influence of those books which circulate round the world, whose sentences were first written on bark, and are now merely copied from time to time on to the linen paperâ⬠(Thoreau) The book reveals the transcendentalism of the author where he emphasizes on the beauty of the nature by describing the sides of the path being adorned by ââ¬Å"the sand cherry with its delicate flowersâ⬠. (Thoreau) The sounds of the nature like the bird chirping make the author feel the harmony and pleasure. The author perfectly enjoys his ââ¬Å"strange libertyâ⬠(Thoreau) The description of the nature by the author reveals the perfect harmony and joy the author is experiencing. One may be of the opinion that the books deals with the authorââ¬â¢s opinion against the modern life settlement and the luxurious life one spends, ââ¬Å"I see young men, my townsmen, whose misfortune it is to have inherited farms, houses, barns, cattle and farming toolâ⬠or the authors explanation of the beauty of nature while he explains the ââ¬Å"strange liberty of natureâ⬠(Thoreau), but reading of the complete book would reveal that the book is all about individuality, about leading the life one wants without following the conventions, ââ¬Å"The life in us is like the water in the riverâ⬠. (Thoreau) The book needs a thorough reading and understanding of the reader and reassessing is required as the narrative style is difficult. The initial reading of the book reveals the sarcasm and the wit of the author where he talks about the ââ¬Å"frivolousâ⬠(Thoreau) nature of the human kind. The book focuses on

Rhetorical analysis about the westboro church. the link to the article is on the intructions - Essay Example Among the many freedoms that the American people enjoy, the freedom of speech was the first amendment made to the American constitution and was included in the bill of rights. It is the most fundamental freedom and given priority by the founding fathers to define the American spirit. However, expression of this right is dependent on the individual and the topic under discussion. Sensitive topics attract a lot of debate from different parties who may be in favour or against the ideas that one expresses. Moreover, it is necessary to realise that the universe is not homogenous in its views and, it is through this that the world grows (Werhan, 8). The expression of this freedom can lead to overexploitation, which is punishable by law in cases where the law refers to it as hate speech. In such cases, it leads to issuance of verdicts when expression of this freedom causes emotional or physical damage when directed to parties who may not be the right receivers of the blame or the doers of such an act. However, radical means have to be within the limits of the constitution if they are to be used to express freedom of speech. This will attract no punishment because this freedom is enshrined in the American constitution. This calls for consideration of the extent to which individuals can exercise their freedom of speech because of the many fatalities that have resulted due unnecessary blames and pressures exerted on an individual who is purported to go against moral standards. This piece of writing is addressed to learned individuals in the American society because this writer applies impartiality in addressing the freedom of expression. This is because the writer does not give limitations on exercise of their freedom of speech. He only exposes all sides of this freedom and gives the reader an opportunity to decide their stance. The general American population does not have adequate knowledge about the bill of rights.
